U. S. Army Black Aviation Association (USABAA), Inc.

WHO WE ARE

The U. S. Army Black Aviation Association (USABAA), Inc. was founded in June 1983 by CW3 (Ret.) George T. Johnson.  Our first meeting was held at the Wichita Royale Hotel in downtown Wichita, Kansas.  Initially, the organization was called the U. S. Army Black Pilot's reunion.  However, we wanted the organization to be open to all Active, Reserve, National Guards, Retired Aviators, enlisted and civilian employees involved in all areas of Army Aviation, so we renamed the organization the U. S. Army Black Aviation Association, Inc.

Some 23 Army Aviation personnel attended the first meeting in Wichita, Kansas and five non-attendees joined as chartered members. Provisional Officers, to include a (1) President, (2) Vice-President, (3) Secretary and (4) Treasurer were duly elected to office.  Their terms were for the year 1983 - 1984.

The reunion received outstanding support from the Department of Defense, Department of the Army, the State of Kansas, and the City of Wichita.  Military personnel from Fort Rucker, Alabama; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; and the Wichita Army Reserves and Recruiting Stations presented military seminars and provided displays.  Fort Riley, Kansas had static displays of their latest Rotary Wing Aircraft.  State and local aircraft industry representatives were also on hand showing their displays and making presentations.

Subsequent reunions have been held in Washington, D. C.; Atlanta, Georgia; Fort Rucker, Alabama; Las Vegas, Nevada; Hampton, Virginia; Memphis, TN; New Orleans, LA; San Antonio, TX; Fayetteville, NC and Saint Louis, Missouri.  For several years, we held a joint reunion with other aviation organizations under the umbrella of the International Black Aerospace Council (IBAC).

Although our focus is on getting blacks and other minorities who have an interest in aviation involved in our efforts, we also hope to get the total Army Aviation community involved in helping us to achieve our goals and objectives.

Therefore, our first objective is to increase the membership in USABAA.
